Guillermo
Quaini
Every
fan has his/her admiring player.
In my case Guillermo Quaini is the ultimate and the most admiring player in
volleyball world.
Because of him I got so much into the Argentine national team.
The first game of 1995 World Cup in Tokyo was the first time I saw him.
The third game against Japan was the game that I made up mind to follow
the team whatever happens
(sounds crazy, huh?). Argentine team led the match from the beginning and
was quite sure that they would win the match, but they didn’t.
It was the upset match so the Argentine players looked pretty depressed
after the match.
When the team was about to going back to the locker room, I
stretched my hand to Quaini.
Then he quickly showed very warm smile on his face and shook hands
with me. I never forget that smile.
It was so mesmerizing.
Since
then I have had opportunities to get to know him in person.
The most attractive part of Quaini is his character.
During the game Quaini is the one who is trying to get back the
rhythm of the team
and trying to subdue conflicting teammates.
Quaini can do those things because everyone in the team trusts him.
Moreover, Quaini helped me when I planned a trip for the World League Final
Round 1999 in Argentine.
I didn’t know anyone who could help me to get the information of
the competition.
To make a long story short, he found the person that helped and made me
possible see the competition.
Without his help, I might not have gone to Argentine.
Such his character makes me fanatic to support Argentine national team.
Quaini
was named the team captain for 1999 World League season.
I knew that one of these days Quaini would be the team captain.
So I was content that I was able to see him in the captain’s uniform
with my bare eyes.
Not
only with the looks, but also the quality of play is important to be recognized
as a good and popular player.
One of Argentine team staff told me, “Quaini is popular in
Argentine because he has got something special”.
Quaini is not only serious nor typical lousy Latino; he is a regular
person,
however, he’s got something very special that attracts many fans, especially
me.
